Western States Horse Expo Welcomes Latest Clinician
Sacramento, CA
The Western States Horse Expo is pleased to announce that Canadian dressage rider and trainer Shannon Dueck will be a featured clinician during this year's event. Dueck, who also has duel citizenship and resides in Loxahatchee, FL, represented Canada at the highest levels of the sport on many occasions, and is currently aiming her top mount Ayscha towards the 2012 London Olympics. The Western States Horse Expo is scheduled for June 8-10, 2012 at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, CA.
Her mother, Jacqueline Oldham, introduced Dueck to dressage at a very young age, and in 1994 she spent many months training in Holland as a working student for Bert Rutten. In 1995, Dueck rode in her first international competition and was long-listed for the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1996 with her first star mount, Korona. The pair eventually earned the Individual Silver Medal at the 1999 Pan American Games and competed at the 2003 World Cup Finals. Dueck's current mount, Ayscha, began the Grand Prix in 2010 at just nine-years-old, and has competed internationally with the Canadian team. The pair have now set their sights on the 2012 London Olympics, where they hope to help bring home a medal for their home country. More info...

An international field contested the $50,000 Surfside Grand Prix presented by ShowBiz Magazine Friday evening at the Del Mar National Horse Show. Of the 26 entries in the class, six combinations were members of the USEF Long List for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the 2012 Olympic Games. The prestigious California horse show, held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, serves as the first of four 2012 US Show Jumping Team Observation Events. Don't Just Dump that Old Tack, Give it a Second Career!
Mary Cox
The decision to sell my favorite saddle was due to the cold hard fact that I hadn’t jumped in more than 5 years, my passion has been Dressage for quite some time and I thought it was “time”. But my reaction to the phone call was ”What??!! Oh No, what had I done?”
Thoughts raced through my head….”Maybe I made a mistake and I’ll want to jump again…..and….I’ll never find a saddle that will fit me so well” With tears welling up in my eyes I suddenly realized why I felt so sad at my saddle’s final depart. To let go of my jump saddle meant I had to really let go of my once in lifetime mare, Fatima. She had passed away 5 years ago and only recently had I even allowed the horse I am leasing to “borrow” her bridle and blankets! More info...

“Rolex Ride The Course” Media Ride Puts Journalists in the Hot Seat
By Kim MacMillen
Looking through Comanche’s ears as we jigged up to the Rolex Head of the Lake water complex the jumps looked even more daunting from the saddle than from the ground, if that’s possible. Comanche, a red roan Appaloosa gelding, was my trusty, albeit enthusiastic, mount on the 2012 “Rolex Ride The Course” media trail ride around cross-country at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Thanks to Rolex Watch and Merrick Haydon of Revolution Sports, a small group of lucky journalists had the chance to tour the course on horseback to see the obstacles and galloping track from the perspective of the horse and rider. Our tour guides were Olympic silver medalist and veteran of numerous U.S. eventing teams Gina Miles and USEF President and Olympic gold medalist David O’Connor. We also had a visit with Derek di Grazia, the course designer, at one of the obstacles. More info...
