Big Purses, Sore Horses, and Death
Horse Racing is not so pretty
As he trained for his first race, at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, the 3-year-old thoroughbred Wes Vegas galloped on the track most mornings and had two timed workouts. But his handlers also prepared him in another way: In the month before the race, records show, he received 10 intravenous injections of potent drugs for pain, one the day before he ran; two injections of a drug for joint disease; corticosteroid injections in his two front ankles; a sedative; and an ulcer drug.
For all the preparation, that first race, on March 3, turned out to be his last.
As he approached the first turn, Wes Vegas broke a leg and had to be euthanized. More info...

Pat Valenzuela Announces Latest Comeback
Hollywood Park, CA
Patrick Valenzuela has announced his latest comeback through agent Tom Knust, saying he plans to return to race riding at Betfair Hollywood Park April 26.
“He’ll start the first day at Hollywood,” Knust told the publicity department at Santa Anita Park April 12.
The 49-year-old Valenzuela announced his retirement from riding just over four months ago, citing gall bladder surgery and his constant struggle to make weight. But rumors began circulating almost immediately that he would be making a comeback. He last rode on Nov. 13 at Hollywood Park.
“I’m happy to hear it,” said his cousin, former jockey Fernando Valenzuela, 41, now an exercise rider. “Patrick is better off when he’s working. He needs to lose four or five more pounds and he’ll be ready. I know he wants to be back to ride Acclamation in the Inglewood (gr. IIIT).”

Hymn Book, Ron the Greek head Oaklawn Handicap
Oaklawn Park
Recent Grade 1 winners Hymn Book and Ron the Greek head a strong field of eight for the $400,000 Oaklawn Handicap April 14 at Oaklawn Park.
The 66th running of the the 1 1/8-mile Oaklawn Handicap shapes up as a dandy. Hymn Book, trained by Shug McGaughey, won the Donn Handicap Feb. 11, and Ron the Greek, from the Bill Mott barn, dominated the Santa Anita Handicap March 3. They are the 118-pound co-highweights.
In addition, the field includes Nehro, last year's runner-up in the Kentucky Derby; General George Handicap winner Yawanna Twist; and Oaklawn specialists Alternation and Win Willy, who captured the Oaklawn Handicap last year after finishing second in 2010.
The Oaklawn Handicap immediately precedes the Arkansas Derby. It is the 10th race on the program with a 5:07 p.m. CDT post. More info...

Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys
NY Times
In 2008, after a Kentucky Derby horse, Eight Belles, broke two ankles on national television and was euthanized, Congress extracted promises from the racing industry to make its sport safer. While safety measures like bans on anabolic steroids have been enacted, assessing their impact has been difficult because many tracks do not keep accurate accident figures or will not release them.
But an investigation by The New York Times has found that industry practices continue to put animal and rider at risk. A computer analysis of data from more than 150,000 races, along with injury reports, drug test results and interviews, shows an industry still mired in a culture of drugs and lax regulation and a fatal breakdown rate that remains far worse than in most of the world. All Others' Edges Union Rags as KDFW Choice
Kentucky Derby

A busy final day in the second of three betting pools in Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager ended with the “All Others” interest narrowly edging individual choice Union Rags to emerge as the pool’s favorite.
Betting in Pool 2 pushed the total wagering for the KDFW past the $1 million mark.
Along with the strong support for Fountain of Youth (gr. II) winner Union Rags as the horse most likely to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at Churchill Downs May 5, there was substantial backing during the final hours of the pool for reigning 2-year-old champion Hansen. The upset loser in Gulfstream Park’s Holy Bull (gr. III) rebounded to notch an impressive victory on in the $400,000 Gotham (gr. III) March 3 at New York’s Aqueduct.
